Gul Barbier, LPC-R, NCC

My long-term passion for psychology led me to earn a master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Wake Forest University and to become a resident counselor. Previously, I completed a master’s degree in project management at George Washington University. I supported government contracts for 20 years and decided to make a positive contribution on an individual level. During my internship, I worked with adult individuals and couples who struggle with depression, anxiety, trauma and abuse, relationship problems, bipolar disorder, grief, life transitions, adjustment issues, marriage problems, and substance use. In addition, I conducted group counseling. I have Gottman Level 1 and 2 couples counseling training.

My therapy philosophy centers on the belief that people are not defined by diagnosis or dysfunction. I see the therapeutic process as non-linear, sometimes uncomfortable, yet ultimately transformational when founded on a strong alliance between therapist and client. Through collaboration, exploration, and introspection, clients can gain a deeper understanding of themselves, shaped by both internal and external influences. I strive to provide unconditional care, support, and empathy in a non-judgmental environment, honoring each person’s unique path. Even small shifts in thoughts or behaviors can spark positive change. Ultimately, therapy aims to help individuals live with greater congruence, deeper insight, and self-awareness, fostering skills for self-healing, inner peace, and restored wellness.

My approach emphasizes authenticity and clients' individual needs; therefore, I prioritize an integrative approach that incorporates various modalities. I utilize cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, psychodynamic, person-centered, emotionally focused, and Gottman therapies. Moreover, I benefit from art interventions. I conduct sessions in person and via telehealth.
