About Me
Welcome. I believe the most important aspect of psychotherapy is the relationship you develop with your therapist. Real change comes from experiencing a different way of understanding yourself and relating to others—not simply from reading about what you “should” do or gaining insight into why something is happening.
I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with more than 25 years of experience working with adults and couples. I help people navigate concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, relationship difficulties, and times when life simply feels overwhelming or difficult to manage. Many of the people I work with want to improve how they cope, better understand themselves and their relationships, or work through experiences from the past that continue to affect their lives today.
My Approach to Therapy
My focus in treatment is on the relationship. I want therapy to be a place where we can talk openly about what is happening in your life, recognize patterns, and understand the experiences that have shaped you.
My style is direct, humorous, relational, and eclectic, with a psychodynamic approach. I believe the past is important, so we may explore earlier experiences and relationships while connecting them to what is happening in your life today.
I also believe therapy involves both support and guidance. At times, you may need someone to listen and understand; at other times, you may benefit from honest feedback or a different perspective. My goal is to balance the two in a way that helps you better understand yourself and make meaningful changes in your life.
What to Expect When Working With Me
Your first appointment is an opportunity for us to begin getting to know one another. We will discuss your history and what you feel comfortable disclosing so that I can better understand what brings you to therapy.
From there, therapy is an active process. Through our conversations and interpersonal feedback, we can explore the obstacles that may be preventing you from reaching your goals, including how you experience relationships and how others may experience you.
Finding the right therapist matters. I believe a good fit involves being able to relate to your therapist and develop a genuine connection.
Experience Beyond Psychotherapy
In addition to psychotherapy, I have extensive experience in psychological assessment and professional consultation, including bariatric evaluations, immigration evaluations, and expert-witness/testimony.
In addition to my doctorate in Clinical Psychology, I hold a Master’s degree in Educational Psychology from UNC@Chapel Hill! I have found that background especially valuable because psychotherapy involves learning—learning about yourself, your relationships, and new ways of responding to situations in your life and use this to improve my “teaching”.
I am also the author of ABCs of Mental Health: 26 Chapters Toward Healing, which reflects my interest in helping people better understand mental health and the process of change and have a variety of posts on social media.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who do you work with?
I work best with adults ages 18+ and couples, including people experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma and PTSD, relationship difficulties, stress, and other challenges that may be interfering with their lives or relationships.
What is your approach to therapy?
My approach is relationship-focused, direct, humorous, and eclectic, with a psychodynamic perspective. I believe understanding the past is important, particularly when earlier experiences continue to influence your relationships, emotions, or choices in the present.
What should I expect during my first appointment?
We will begin by discussing your history and what brings you to therapy. You can share at a pace that allows us to develop the relationship and understanding needed to do meaningful work together.
How do I know if you are the right therapist for me?
I believe it comes down to whether we can relate to one another and establish a good connection. Therapy is deeply relational, and talking together is often the best way to determine whether you feel comfortable enough to do the work.
How long will therapy take?
This is one of the questions I hear frequently. There is not one timeline that applies to everyone. How long therapy takes depends on what brings you in, your history, your goals, and the changes you want to make.
Dr. Goldberg provides in-person appointments at our Vienna office, as well as telehealth services for clients who prefer to meet virtually.
