About Me
I’m Cary Lee Hanes, a therapist with a Master’s in Social Work from George Mason University and more than three years of experience in a variety of settings. I was drawn to this work while volunteering as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for foster children. Seeing the difference that social workers and therapists could make in the lives of adolescents inspired me to pursue this work myself.
I work with and provide trauma-informed care to adolescents ages 13+, young adults, adults, college students, and families, with particular experience helping people navigate anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, childhood trauma and PTSD, grief, relationships, family concerns, and major life transitions. My goal is to understand your unique concerns, help you feel less stuck, and support you in becoming more encouraged and empowered as you move forward.
My Approach to Therapy
I am an active and engaged therapist, but I also believe you should lead the way. We’ll talk about what matters to you, identify what you want to change, and develop goals together. I’ll listen closely, offer another perspective, and sometimes challenge you when I think it could help. I also use humor and may share some of my own experiences when I believe they could be useful.
Therapy with me isn’t about being told what to do. It’s about working together to understand what’s keeping you stuck and finding realistic ways to help you move forward.
What to Expect When Working With Me
Many of my clients come to therapy because they feel lonely, depressed, stuck, or unsure how to move forward. You may struggle with social anxiety and want to form new relationships but find it difficult to connect with people. You might feel like you’re missing out on life or recognize that experiences from your past are still affecting you today. Or maybe you’re simply looking for new coping skills and a different perspective on what you’re going through.
During our first appointment, I’ll ask questions to better understand you and how you’re functioning in different parts of your life, including home, school, work, and relationships. I also encourage you to ask me questions. This is your opportunity to get to know me, too, and we’ll work together to determine what you hope to gain from therapy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who do you work with?
I work with clients ages 13 and older, particularly adolescents, young adults, and college students. My experience includes anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, childhood trauma and PTSD, grief, relationship concerns, family issues, and life transitions.
Can therapy help with social anxiety and loneliness?
Yes. Many of my clients struggle with social anxiety, loneliness, and difficulty forming new connections. You may want stronger friendships or relationships but feel anxious about putting yourself out there, or you may feel like you’re missing out while everyone else seems to be moving forward. Therapy can give us a place to understand what’s getting in the way, build coping skills, and work toward the connections you want.
What is therapy with you actually like?
I’m actively engaged and listening, rather than sitting quietly while you do all the talking. I’ll offer feedback, help you work toward goals, and challenge you at times while still allowing you to lead the process. I also use humor when it feels natural.
What if I’m nervous about starting therapy?
Change is hard. Sometimes we just need someone to walk beside us, encourage us, and listen to us as we move toward it. You can set the pace and decide what you feel comfortable discussing. You don’t have to share everything during your first session.
Can people really change?
Yes. I believe change is possible when you’re willing to take small steps toward it. You are never too young, too old, or too set in your ways to make meaningful changes in your life.
A Little More About Me
Outside of therapy, music is a big part of my life. On weekends, you can find me singing in a local rock band.
If you’re ready to take the first step, I want you to feel comfortable, validated, and heard as we work together. I look forward to helping you reach your goals.
Cary Lee provides in-person appointments at our Reston office, as well as telehealth services for clients who prefer to meet virtually.
