Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need therapy and medication?
It depends on your individual needs, symptoms, and treatment goals. For some people, medication alone may help reduce symptoms and improve daily functioning. For others, therapy alone may be appropriate.
However, research has shown that for many mental health conditions, a combination of therapy and medication management can be more effective than either treatment alone. While medication can help manage symptoms, therapy helps you develop coping skills, address underlying challenges, and create lasting changes in your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
During your evaluation, your provider will take the time to understand your symptoms, medical history, and goals before recommending a personalized treatment plan. If therapy, medication, or a combination of both is recommended, your provider will explain the reasoning behind that recommendation and work with you to determine the best path forward.
Can I receive medication management without therapy?
No. You do not have to be seeing a therapist to receive medication management at Dr. Goldberg & Associates.
However, depending on your symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment needs, your psychiatric provider may recommend that you also participate in therapy. For some individuals, a combination of medication management and therapy provides the most effective treatment and can lead to better long-term outcomes.
If therapy is recommended, your provider will discuss the reasons with you and help determine the most appropriate level of care. Our goal is always to create a personalized treatment plan that best supports your mental health and overall well-being.
What happens during the first psychiatric appointment?
Your first appointment is focused on getting to know you and developing a thorough understanding of your mental health needs. Your psychiatric provider will complete a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, which includes discussing your current symptoms, medical history, family history, previous mental health treatment, current and past medications, and your goals for treatment.
During this visit, your provider will also review our practice policies, informed consent, and privacy practices, and answer any questions you may have about the medication management process.
In some cases, additional information or testing may be needed before determining the safest and most effective treatment plan. For example, your provider may recommend laboratory work, an electrocardiogram (EKG), psychological testing, or request records from previous healthcare providers to better understand your health history.
While medication is often prescribed during the first appointment, this is not always appropriate. The decision to prescribe medication is based on your provider’s clinical assessment, medical history, current symptoms, and any additional information needed to ensure treatment is both safe and effective.
Will I receive medication at my first visit?
While medication is often prescribed during the first appointment, this is not always appropriate. The decision to prescribe medication is based on your provider’s clinical assessment, medical history, current symptoms, and any additional information needed to ensure treatment is both safe and effective.
How often are medication management follow-up appointments?
The frequency of your follow-up appointments depends on your individual needs, including your diagnosis, symptoms, how you’re responding to treatment, and whether you’re starting or adjusting a medication.
If you’re beginning a new medication or making changes to your treatment plan, your provider will typically schedule follow-up appointments more frequently. This allows them to monitor how the medication is working, assess for any side effects, and make adjustments if needed to ensure you’re receiving safe and effective care.
If you’re experiencing more severe or rapidly changing symptoms, your provider may recommend appointments several times a month until your symptoms are better controlled.
Once your symptoms are stable and your medication regimen is working well, follow-up visits are generally scheduled every 60 to 90 days for ongoing monitoring, medication refills, and to review your treatment goals.
Your provider will work with you to determine a follow-up schedule that best supports your needs while ensuring your treatment remains safe, effective, and personalized.
Can children receive medication management?
Yes. Dr. Goldberg and Associates can provide medication management for all ages. If you are not sure if medication management is appropriate for your child, you can always schedule an appointment so your provider can collaborate with you on the best treatment plan.
What if I’m already taking medication?
If you’re already taking medication for a mental health condition, that’s completely okay. Many of our patients come to us because they’ve recently moved, their previous provider retired, they’re looking for a new psychiatric provider, or they’d like a second opinion about their current treatment plan.
During your first appointment, your provider will review the medications you’re currently taking, any medications you’ve taken in the past, how well they’ve worked, and any side effects you’ve experienced. This information helps us understand what’s been effective, what hasn’t, and how to make the best recommendations for your ongoing care.
Please bring a list of your current medications, including the dosage and how often you take them. If you have records from a previous provider, you’re welcome to share those as well.
Your provider will work with you to determine whether continuing your current medication, making adjustments, or exploring other treatment options is the most appropriate path based on your individual needs and treatment goals.
Do I need ADHD testing before psychiatric medication management treatment?
Not always. Whether ADHD testing is recommended depends on your individual history, current symptoms, previous diagnosis, and whether you’ve taken ADHD medication in the past.
For some patients with a well-established diagnosis and documented treatment history, additional testing may not be necessary. For others-especially if symptoms are new, a diagnosis has never been formally confirmed, or there are questions about what may be contributing to the symptoms-your provider may recommend a comprehensive psychological evaluation before prescribing medication.
ADHD symptoms can overlap with other mental health conditions, learning differences, sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, or medical concerns. Comprehensive testing helps ensure an accurate diagnosis and allows your provider to recommend the most appropriate treatment for your specific needs.
If testing is recommended, your provider will explain why and discuss the next steps with you. Our goal is to make sure you receive the safest, most effective, and most appropriate care possible.
Can I switch providers?
Absolutely. Finding the right provider is an important part of receiving quality mental health care, and you are never “locked in” to seeing a specific psychiatric provider at Dr. Goldberg & Associates.
If you feel your provider isn’t the best fit for your needs, simply contact our Medication Management team by phone at (703) 935-0058 (Option 2) or email us at [email protected]. We’ll work with you to better understand your preferences and help match you with another provider who may be a better fit.
We also welcome your feedback about your experience. Your input not only helps us find the provider that’s right for you, but also allows us to continually improve the care and experience we provide to all of our patients.
Our goal is to make sure you feel comfortable, supported, and confident in your treatment every step of the way.
Do you prescribe controlled medications?
Yes. Our psychiatric providers prescribe controlled medications when they are clinically appropriate and medically indicated.
The decision to prescribe a controlled medication is based on a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, your medical and mental health history, current symptoms, previous treatment, and your provider’s clinical judgment. In some cases, additional information-such as prior medical records or psychological testing-may be needed before determining the most appropriate treatment plan.
If a controlled medication is prescribed, your provider will discuss the benefits, potential risks, monitoring requirements, and any applicable federal or state prescribing guidelines with you.
Our priority is to recommend the safest and most effective treatment plan based on your individual needs.
What if my therapist referred me?
We are honored to be entrusted with your care. If you are looking to get started and are not sure where to start, simply contact our Medication Management team by phone at (703) 935-0058 (Option 2) or email us at [email protected]. It can be helpful to complete a Release of Information for your therapist so your psychiatrist can coordinate care if needed. If you need a Release of Information, you can request one by emailing [email protected] or calling us.
Does my prescriber offer therapy?
Our prescribers do not offer solely therapy sessions. Each session includes some discussion of symptoms and life events, and there may be some therapeutic techniques used during the session, but for therapy sessions, you can contact our team to be set up with one of therapists who are in-network with insurance.
What do I need for my first appointment with a prescriber?
You will need to complete intake forms, including vitals, insurance information, and medical history information. We ask that you send any recent labs you have had completed so the provider can be as prepared as possible for the session and help prevent prescription delays. Each prescriber’s requirements are different, but you may be asked to complete assessments and questionnaires which help the provider determine a baseline for your current condition and create the best treatment plan for your situation.
How can I request refills or contact my prescriber?
We have a portal that patients can use to message their prescriber directly with symptom concerns and refill requests. If you need access to the portal, please email [email protected] or call (703) 935-0058 (Option 2).
