Therapy for Every Stage of Life
Mental health needs change throughout life, and we're here to support you every step of the way. We provide therapy for children as young as 3 years old, adolescents, adults, and older adults. Whether you're navigating childhood behavioral concerns, teenage anxiety, relationship challenges, career stress, or life transitions, our team is here to help.
Comprehensive Mental Health Care in One Practice
Your mental health needs may evolve over time. That's why we offer a full continuum of outpatient services under one roof, including:
- Individual therapy
- Child and adolescent therapy

- Family therapy
- Medication management
- Psychological testing and evaluations
By offering multiple services in one practice, we can provide coordinated care that supports your long-term mental health goals.
Personalized Therapist Matching
Finding the right therapist shouldn't feel overwhelming. Rather than expecting you to sort through dozens of provider profiles on your own, our scheduling team takes the time to learn about your concerns, preferences, availability, and insurance coverage before recommending clinicians who are the best fit for your needs.
Our goal is to make the process as simple and stress-free as possible so you can focus on beginning your journey toward healing.
Flexible Appointment Options
Life is busy, and accessing mental health care should fit into your schedule. We offer daytime, evening, and weekend appointments whenever available, making it easier to receive the care you need without disrupting work, school, or family responsibilities.
You can also choose the format that works best for you with both in-person appointments at our six Northern Virginia offices and secure telehealth services for eligible clients in multiple states.
Insurance-Friendly Care
We believe quality mental health care should be as accessible as possible. Dr. Goldberg & Associates is in-network with several major insurance providers, including:
- Anthem
- Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS)
- Cigna
- UnitedHealthcare
We also offer self-pay options for individuals who prefer to pay privately or whose insurance is out of network. While we do not accept Medicare or Medicaid, our billing team is happy to help you understand your coverage and help you understand the superbill process.
Convenient Locations Throughout Northern Virginia
With six convenient office locations throughout Northern Virginia in Alexandria, McLean, Reston, and Sterling, it's easy to find care close to home, work, or school. If you prefer the flexibility of virtual appointments, many of our providers also offer secure telehealth sessions for clients in states where they are licensed.

Our Therapy Approaches
Every person is different, which is why our therapists use a variety of evidence-based treatment approaches. Your therapist will recommend the techniques that best fit your goals, personality, and the challenges you're facing.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Best for: Anxiety, depression, stress, OCD, and negative thinking patterns
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps you identify unhelpful thoughts and replace them with healthier, more realistic ways of thinking. It's one of the most researched and effective forms of therapy for many mental health conditions.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Best for: Emotional regulation, self-harm, borderline personality disorder, anxiety, and overwhelming emotions
DBT teaches practical skills for managing intense emotions, improving relationships, reducing impulsive behaviors, and coping with life's challenges through mindfulness and emotional regulation.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Best for: Anxiety, depression, chronic stress, trauma, and life transitions
ACT helps you accept difficult thoughts and emotions instead of fighting them, while encouraging you to live according to your personal values and build psychological flexibility.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Best for: Trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and distressing life experiences
EMDR is a specialized therapy that helps the brain process traumatic memories so they become less emotionally overwhelming and easier to manage.
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)
Best for: Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), phobias, and anxiety disorders
ERP gradually helps you face fears in a safe, supportive environment while reducing compulsive behaviors and avoidance patterns.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
Best for: Trauma, anxiety, self-esteem, and relationship challenges
IFS helps individuals understand and heal the different "parts" of themselves while developing greater self-compassion and emotional balance.
Trauma-Focused Therapy
Best for: PTSD, childhood trauma, abuse, and complex trauma
Trauma-focused therapies help individuals safely process difficult experiences while building coping skills, resilience, and emotional stability
Prolonged Exposure Therapy
Best for: PTSD, trauma, and anxiety
This evidence-based treatment gradually helps people confront trauma-related memories and situations, reducing fear and avoidance over time.
Brainspotting
Best for: Trauma, anxiety, performance concerns, and emotional healing
Brainspotting uses eye position and focused attention to help process unresolved emotional experiences stored in the brain and body.
Somatic Therapy
Best for: Trauma, chronic stress, anxiety, and emotional regulation
Somatic therapy focuses on the connection between the mind and body, helping clients recognize and release physical patterns related to stress and trauma.
Person-Centered Therapy
Best for: Personal growth, self-esteem, life transitions, and relationship concerns
Person-centered therapy provides a compassionate, nonjudgmental environment where clients can explore their thoughts and emotions while building confidence and self-understanding.
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)
Best for: Goal setting, stress, life transitions, and short-term problem solving
SFBT focuses on your strengths and helps identify practical solutions rather than dwelling on past problems.
Psychodynamic Therapy
Best for: Relationship patterns, self-awareness, trauma, and long-standing emotional concerns
Psychodynamic therapy explores how past experiences and unconscious patterns influence present-day thoughts, emotions, and relationships.
Narrative Therapy
Best for: Identity concerns, trauma, grief, and life transitions
Narrative therapy helps people separate themselves from their problems and rewrite the stories they tell about themselves and their lives.
Mindfulness-Based Therapy
Best for: Anxiety, depression, stress, and emotional regulation
Mindfulness-based approaches teach you how to stay present, reduce overthinking, and respond to difficult emotions with greater awareness and acceptance.
Compassion-Focused Therapy
Best for: Shame, self-criticism, anxiety, and depression
This approach helps individuals develop self-compassion, reduce harsh self-judgment, and build healthier emotional resilience.
Play Therapy
Best for: Children ages 3+, behavioral concerns, anxiety, trauma, and emotional expression
Play therapy allows children to communicate and process emotions through play in developmentally appropriate ways.
Art Therapy
Best for: Children, teens, trauma, anxiety, grief, and emotional expression
Art therapy uses creative expression to help individuals explore emotions, reduce stress, and process experiences that may be difficult to express with words.
Sand Tray Therapy
Best for: Children, trauma, anxiety, and emotional processing
Sand tray therapy provides a hands-on, creative way for clients to express emotions and work through difficult experiences using miniature figures and a sandbox.
Gottman Method Couples Therapy
Best for: Couples, communication challenges, conflict, and rebuilding trust
The Gottman Method uses decades of relationship research to help couples strengthen communication, deepen connection, and resolve conflict more effectively.
Individualized Treatment for Every Client
No two people experience mental health challenges in the same way. That's why our therapists don't rely on a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, we personalize treatment by drawing from one or more evidence-based therapy approaches to meet your unique goals, preferences, and needs.
Whether you're seeking support for anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship concerns, ADHD, or another mental health condition, we'll match you with a therapist whose training and experience align with your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know which therapist to choose?
The therapeutic relationship is one of the most important factors in how successful therapy is. It can be helpful to identify some goals for therapy/what you are looking to work on with therapy. You can use those goals to help look for a provider who has experience in those areas. It is also helpful to ask yourself if you have a preference in gender for your provider, if you are open to virtual or prefer in-person appointments, and if there are times that work best for you. These can help narrow down the search. Once you find some options, your provider's bio can give you a sense of who they are prior to meeting them.
How quickly can I get an appointment?
At Dr. Goldberg & Associates, we can generally get a new patient in within the week, sometimes same or next day, depending on patient needs and the times and dates you are looking for. Evening and weekend appointments fill up first and are first come first serve, so reach out today to see what is available.
Can I switch therapists?
Absolutely. You are never "locked in" to a therapist you feel is not a good fit. Sometimes it takes a few tries to really find out what you are looking for in your therapist or to find someone you feel connected to. If your first choice is not a good fit, don't get discouraged, that just means you have more information about what you are and aren't looking for in your provider. If you would like another therapist, you can always contact our admin team and ask for a different provider. It can be helpful to share if there was anything you did or did not like about a certain therapist's approach so we can use that to tailor our suggestions.
How long is therapy?
Our sessions are 53 minutes long.
Do you offer evening appointments?
Our therapists do have evening and weekend appointments, but they fill up quickly.
Do you accept insurance?
Dr. Goldberg & Associates accepts insurance. We are in-network with Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield, CIGNA, and United Healthcare. We are not in-network with Medicaid or Medicare plans.
How much does therapy cost?
Therapy costs vary depending on your insurance plan. No insurance plan is the same. Out-of-pocket, our sessions are anywhere from $185.00 to $275.00 for therapy appointments. It will depend on whether you are seeing a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, or a Psychologist. Call us to find out your costs.
Can children be seen online?
Children can be seen virtually, but we do not recommend it for younger children since it can be hard for them to focus and the therapy can be less effective. You can always try out a virtual provider and switch to an in-person provider if it is not a good fit for your child.
What's the difference between therapy and medication management?
Therapy and medication management are two important parts of mental health care, but serve different purposes. Therapy helps you process your emotions and experiences through talking, whereas medication management treats your symptoms using medication. Sometimes your psychiatric provider can provide therapeutic services, but it is not always included in medication management services where the primary focus is to find the right medications to help alleviate your symptoms and help you live your best life.

Do I need a referral?
Most of the time you do not need a referral for therapy. However, some insurance plans do require a referral for therapy. It is always best to call your insurance company at the number on the back of your insurance card to see what their requirements prior to your first appointment. We do require a referral for psychological testing and evaluations since most insurance companies require one to cover testing.
What happens at my first appointment?
Your first appointment is where your provider will learn about you and what you are looking for in therapy. This is also the time for you to learn about your therapist and how they practice. They will ask you questions about your goals, history, and symptoms. Your therapist will also review the practice's policies and our cancelation policy.
