About Me

My long-term passion for psychology led me to earn my Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Wake Forest University and become a resident counselor. Before entering the mental health field, I earned a master’s degree in project management from George Washington University and spent 20 years supporting government contracts. I ultimately chose to pursue counseling because I wanted to make a positive difference on a more individual level. I speak Turkish and entry-level French, and outside of work, I enjoy traveling, history, reading, and playing racket sports.

I work with adults and couples experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma and PTSD, bipolar disorder, grief, relationship concerns, life transitions, self-esteem challenges, and substance use. I also have Gottman Level 1 and Level 2 training in couples counseling.

My Approach to Therapy

I believe people are not defined by a diagnosis or dysfunction. Therapy is rarely a perfectly linear process, and meaningful change can sometimes feel uncomfortable. I believe that process can be transformational when it is built on a strong, trusting relationship between therapist and client.

My approach is collaborative, authentic, and tailored to each person. Depending on what you need, our sessions may be structured or more conversational. I take time to actively listen and understand your experiences before offering insight or feedback, and I may bring humor into our work when it feels appropriate. We may explore both past experiences and what is happening in your life today.

I use an integrative approach that may incorporate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), psychodynamic therapy, person-centered therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Gottman Method approaches, and art-based interventions.

Who I Work With

Many of my clients come to therapy because they feel stuck—whether in their relationships, in how they feel about themselves, or because of experiences from their past that continue to affect their lives today.

Through collaboration, exploration, and introspection, I help clients develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the internal and external influences that have shaped their experiences. Even small shifts in thoughts or behaviors can create meaningful change.

What to Expect When Working With Me

My goal is to provide an empathetic, nonjudgmental environment where you feel heard and understood. Together, we can explore the concerns that brought you to therapy, strengthen self-awareness, and work toward greater congruence, inner peace, and overall well-being.

I provide both in-person therapy at Dr. Goldberg & Associates’ McLean office and telehealth appointments.

Frequently Asked Questions

What concerns do you work with?

I work with adults and couples experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, trauma and PTSD, grief, bipolar disorder, relationship concerns, life transitions, self-esteem challenges, and substance use.

What is therapy with you like?

My approach is flexible and based on what you need. Some sessions may be more structured, while others may be conversational and exploratory. I prioritize listening and understanding before offering feedback or insight, and we may explore both past experiences and present-day concerns.

Do you provide couples therapy?

Yes. I work with couples experiencing relationship and marital concerns and have completed Gottman Level 1 and Level 2 couples counseling training.

What if I’m nervous about starting therapy?

You do not have to enter therapy with everything figured out. I believe people are much more than a diagnosis or the difficulties they are experiencing. Therapy is a collaborative process, and we can take the time to understand what has brought you here and what you would like to change.

How do I know if you’re the right therapist for me?

I believe a strong therapeutic relationship is an important foundation for meaningful change. If you are looking for a therapist who values collaboration, exploration, authenticity, and developing a deeper understanding of yourself, we may work well together.

A Little More About Me

I believe even small shifts in thoughts or behaviors can spark positive change. My hope is to help you develop greater insight and self-awareness while building skills that support healing, inner peace, and restored wellness. I look forward to listening, understanding, and supporting you as you work toward your goals and your full potential.

Gul provides in-person appointments at our Stevenson Alexandria location, as well as telehealth services for clients who prefer to meet virtually.
